Welcome to the Asian Palate
I fell in love with the pleasures of eating and everything about food before I fell in love with wine. My mother is an extraordinary cook and has the touch for taste on her fingertips. Enjoying a large number of Asian dishes communal-style was, and continues to be, the way I enjoy Asian food despite the challenging issues with wine.
During my studies as a food and wine student, I memorized the food and wine pairing suggestions, even though I was convinced that many of the theories did not apply to Asian meals. In a communal setting comprised of an array of different spices and seasonings, one wine will very rarely go with all the dishes and flavours. In this context, a good match is defined by a wine’s ability to pair with the majority of dishes and enhance the enjoyment of the meal.
Over the past nearly twenty years working in Asia as a food and wine writer, I felt there was an opportunity to develop a community where like-minded food and wine lovers could express their opinions and explore the world of Asian cuisine and wine. Asian Palate is a journey towards understanding and defining something we know, love and appreciate daily - the simple pleasures of a good meal. When I realised how the Asian table was increasingly making room for wine, I felt there was an opportunity to encourage dialogue cross-culturally. This fascinating exchange and communication that goes beyond borders, respects tradition yet incorporates modernity, is the Asian Palate!
I believe good food and wine brings people closer together. Although I have lived in Hong Kong for the past 17 years, I feel just as happy and at home in Seoul, Tokyo, Singapore or Kuala Lumpur, partly because I’ve brought bits and pieces of these diverse cities’ food culture into my own home. My hope for this site is to bring together a community that begins to define the Asian Palate.
Please come back often and join the conversation. We would love to hear from you.
Wishing you great wines, memorable meals & happiness in life!
